In 2016, Georgetown University Libraries colleagues brainstormed ways to enhance class instruction using the Georgetown Maker Hub. Escape rooms, a rising trend, inspired Holly Surbaugh, a UNM librarian, and Melissa S. Jones to explore their educational potential. Their collaboration resulted in a published case study on using escape rooms for learning.
Escape rooms offer an interactive learning experience that engages multiple senses, making abstract concepts tangible and enhancing knowledge retention. Surbaugh emphasized the power of combining course-related puzzles with immersive storytelling to facilitate learning. This innovative approach benefits various educational programs, from nursing to the arts.
A collaborative effort between librarians and students led to a two-year study on escape rooms, focusing on puzzles, narratives, guidance, and support. Their project, “Escape the Hilltop Conspiracy!” aimed to introduce freshmen to the library and improve information literacy. The study involved creating puzzles like the Typewriter Lockbox, where students decoded clues to unlock hidden surprises.
Participant feedback highlighted the positive impact of the escape room experience on their understanding of university libraries and academic success. Students also found joy in creating their own puzzles despite some challenges. Surbaugh noted that this hands-on approach empowered students to apply their knowledge creatively, fostering a deeper connection with the material.
While exploring new teaching methods, Surbaugh continues to investigate how libraries can better support student learning. Her recent studies focus on graduate student experiences and the role of libraries in fostering a sense of belonging among first-generation college students. She envisions further research to refine teaching applications and optimize learning outcomes.
Through her dedication to enhancing educational experiences, Surbaugh exemplifies UNM’s commitment to innovative teaching practices. Her work not only enriches student learning but also contributes to the evolving landscape of educational methodologies. As she continues to push boundaries in library education, Surbaugh’s impact on student success is sure to resonate for years to come.
