Giant Squid, known for games like ABZÛ and The Pathless, is set to launch a new title called Sword of the Sea. This atmospheric surfing adventure promises a blend of thrilling gameplay and meditative exploration, continuing the studio’s reputation for unique design and captivating music, this time composed by Austin Wintory. At the recent Summer Game Fest Play Days, we had the opportunity to experience the game firsthand, guided by Creative Director Matt Nava.
In Sword of the Sea, players take on the role of the Wraith, brought back to life in the desolate Necropolis. The objective is to uncover the ancient sea hidden beneath the land, delving into sinking tombs and ruins inspired by skateparks that preserve the remnants of a lost civilization.
As you traverse the barren landscape, fragments of the past emerge, urging you to investigate and unlock the trapped water. While the demo lacked full context for the story, it offered a glimpse into the gameplay mechanics. Players were invited to navigate environmental puzzles, from building momentum in halfpipes to scaling giant seaweed structures, showcasing the game’s diverse challenges.
Sword of the Sea excels in its level design and intuitive controls, drawing inspiration from classic skateboarding mechanics. The seamless transition between precision platforming and high-speed surfing creates a balanced gameplay experience that is both engaging and immersive. The game’s ability to effortlessly shift between action-packed sequences and tranquil exploration adds depth to the overall experience.
Visually, Sword of the Sea impresses with its dynamic environment, where sand and water appear alive, mirroring the natural world. The game’s worldbuilding evokes a sense of connection and reverence, presenting a living landscape that players are encouraged to protect and cherish. The fluid movement mechanics and limited UI enhance the immersion, allowing players to fully engage with the game world.
Despite its fast-paced gameplay, Sword of the Sea manages to strike a harmonious balance between challenge and relaxation. The game’s innovative traversal mechanics, coupled with its stunning visuals and atmospheric design, create a captivating experience that immerses players in a world of mystery and exploration. The anticipation for Sword of the Sea’s release on August 19, 2025, for PlayStation 5 and PC is palpable, promising an unforgettable journey for players seeking a unique and immersive gaming experience.
