David Williamson, a renowned Australian playwright, unveils his latest masterpiece, “The Puzzle,” set to premiere in Adelaide. The play delves into the intricacies of marriage, desire, polyamory, and parenthood, all against the backdrop of a lifestyle cruise. Williamson drew inspiration for this comedic narrative from his own cruise experience, where unexpected challenges led to the creation of a story that intertwines the lives of diverse characters.
The plot centers around a group of individuals on a lifestyle cruise, including Mandy, played by Ansuya Nathan, who reluctantly embarks on this unconventional journey with her husband and encounters a mix of characters with varying desires and expectations. As the cruise unfolds, mishaps and misunderstandings ensue, leading to a comedic exploration of infidelity, boredom, and human complexities.
The play’s director, Shannon Rush, praises Williamson’s sharp and insightful writing, noting that the play captures the essence of human comedy and tragedy. The cast, including Nathan, expresses enthusiasm for the script’s humor and depth, highlighting the challenges and joys of bringing the characters to life on stage.
For Williamson, the premiere of “The Puzzle” holds special significance as it marks a return to the Adelaide Festival Centre, where he debuted one of his earlier works. Despite announcing retirement years ago due to health reasons, Williamson’s creative energy has been reignited, with multiple new productions in the pipeline.
As the play explores middle-class foibles, insecurities, and the complexities of relationships, audiences are invited to reflect on their own vulnerabilities and desires. Through a lens of comedy and drama, “The Puzzle” promises to entertain and provoke thought as it unfolds on stage at the Dunstan Playhouse from September 20 to October 12.
