For Jamaica Francis, it was the discovery of her children’s toy cupboard and bookshelves that sparked a heartwarming mission. What started as a simple decluttering project turned into a beautiful way to brighten under-resourced classrooms in Durban, South Africa.
Jamaica found herself with a treasure trove of lovely playthings and books that her kids no longer used. Rather than letting them collect dust, she believed there would be someone who could use them to bring joy to other young children. Her generous donation, including characters like “Heffalump” and a friend believed to be “Tigger in disguise”, made its way to The Domino Foundation offices recently and found a new home.
The Foundation’s Rowan Phillips expressed gratitude for the donation, highlighting the impact it would have on the preschoolers in their Early Childhood Development program. Many of the ECD centers they partner with lack teaching resources, making contributions like Jamaica’s essential in enriching the learning experience for young children.
Leader of Domino’s ECD team, Thembelihle Mkhwanazi, explained that their program works with 34 community preschools striving for formal registration with the Department of Basic Education. These schools often struggle with a shortage of quality educational toys and materials, making donations like Jamaica’s invaluable.
Zanele Nzimakwe, the ECD Link liaison manager, emphasized the importance of play in children’s development. Through playing with toys, young learners can explore the world, engage in role-play, and learn how to express their thoughts and feelings. In many homes served by ECD centers, books are a rare commodity, making story-time at school a crucial part of the day.
According to Thembelihle, Jamaica’s gift was received with gratitude, and she encouraged other parents to follow suit by clearing out pre-loved toys and children’s books. In a country where 43% of homes have no books at all, initiatives like this help bridge the gap and promote literacy and storytelling among young children.
