David Williamson’s The Puzzle: A Cruise Ship Journey of Human Relationships

David Williamson, the renowned Australian playwright, has once again graced the stage with a new work, “The Puzzle,” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Dunstan Playhouse. This play, a departure from Williamson’s typical urban Australian settings, unfolds on a cruise ship cruising the Mediterranean, where passengers partake in a ‘lifestyle tour,’ exploring human relationships in a unique setting.

The narrative revolves around three pairs of characters: Brian and Michele, seasoned tourers; Craig, eager to participate, and his hesitant wife Mandy; and the history-loving Drew, who prefers his jigsaw puzzles, contrasting with his adventurous daughter Cassie. The dynamics between these characters provide both comedic and poignant moments, showcasing the complexities of human connections.

Director Shannon Rush skillfully navigates the complexities of libertarian sexual ethics, love triangles, and personal inhibitions, while designer Ailsa Paterson creates a visually striking ‘ship chic’ aesthetic. The cast, led by performers like Chris Asimos, Anna Lindner, and Erik Thomson, delivers a compelling portrayal of the characters, evoking laughter and empathy from the audience.

“The Puzzle” may not offer groundbreaking themes, but it excels in execution, offering a familiar yet engaging exploration of human nature. The play runs at the Dunstan Playhouse until October 12, 2024, inviting audiences to delve into a world where relationships are tested and emotions run high.
