Archaeologists at the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) embarked on a challenging task of reconstructing a vast installation of Ancient Roman frescoes discovered in central London. The fragments, believed to be remnants of an early Roman building, were uncovered during excavations in Southwark, dating back to before 200 CE. These excavations were part of the preparation for the Liberty redevelopment project.
The decorative plaster fragments, scattered in an ancient disposal pit, required meticulous assembly to unveil their historical significance. Han Li, MOLA’s Senior Building Material Specialist, painstakingly arranged the pieces to reveal intricate motifs like birds, fruits, flowers, and lyres. This endeavor was described as reconstructing the “world’s most difficult jigsaw puzzle.”
According to Han Li, the process of laying out the plaster fragments was a unique and thrilling experience, unveiling wall paintings unseen for centuries. The frescoes, known as the “Liberty Wall,” offer insights into the luxurious living spaces of ancient Rome, showcasing high-class decorative elements and aspirations for opulence.
Among the fragments, exceptional discoveries included evidence of a painter’s signature and a mysterious Latin inscription “fecit,” denoting authorship. Additionally, an ancient Greek inscription, featuring a nearly complete Greek alphabet, hinted at a proficient speaker rather than mere writing practice. These findings provide a glimpse into daily life during the Roman era.
The reconstruction of the ancient Roman frescoes not only sheds light on the artistic and cultural sophistication of the period but also underscores the Roman influence on London’s decorative trends. The murals reflect a blend of regional styles, demonstrating the cosmopolitan nature of Roman society.
Through the meticulous piecing together of thousands of fragments, the archaeologists at MOLA have resurrected a piece of history that had been lost for over 1800 years. The painstaking work involved in reconstructing the ancient frescoes highlights the dedication and expertise required in preserving and understanding our cultural heritage.
As we marvel at the intricacies of this ancient Roman “jigsaw puzzle,” we are reminded of the enduring legacy of the past and the importance of archaeological discoveries in enriching our understanding of history and art.
